It was a great day for me and the IndiBlogger team. We were all excited about the first of many IndiBlogger meets in 2009. And like last year, we wanted to start with the Bangalore blogger community.
This time we did not get a larger auditorium but a smaller one at Microsoft, Bangalore office. However, it had a nice ambiance albeit the not so good acoustics. We start at 3:20 PM and kicked off with a welcome speech from Anoop.
Then I was pushed on to the front and was asked to start off the 1 minute to fame session. Although unprepared to start I did manage to get a few laughs from the bloggers when I talked about my Idiot of the day blog and one of its posts, with a little bit of prompting from Anoop. I wasn’t listening to all the bloggers, I am afraid, since I was busy welcoming fellow bloggers into the meet.
Then Girish from Microsoft talked a bit about Microsoft BizSpark, a Microsoft initiative for startups and entrepreneurs.
And then started one of the highlights of the evening, the discussion on blogger rights spearheaded by Sandil from Mutiny.in. The bloggers were inerested to discussion what we can write about and what could be legally interpreted as maligning indivuals or organizations. The press had a very active interest too in this session.
Next came the Windows 7 session taken by Vic and Vijay. It was a good session with a lot of interaction from the crowd. We had to stop the session after a long time for account of the pizzas getting cold… hehehehe
.

After a bit of food in our stomachs and our energies revitalized we got back to what we came for, talk and discussion about blogging. For the very first time our “know your readers” session was a blooper. And I digress.
This was a time when Aarif talked a bit about a software he has developed and very popular on the internet. This is a software called Process Manager for Windows – PMW – which is an efficient and better alternative for your Windows Task Manager. Do try it out if you are computer savvy.

The last session was an impromptu session on blogging in general. Sherin, a blogger who earns money through his investment blog stole the show for most of the time. And then a question was asked about self hosted blogs which I had a lot to say. After all, I had used most of the blog platforms with domain names in these past years. I have promised to put out a document that will explain how to easily buy a domain and host it through a blog provider like Google or WordPress.

And then we winded up and with happy smiles all around we left for home and endless parties!

Hi Anwin,
Your discussion about hosting and domain names was indeed very insightful; so much so that I am just about to take the plunge with my blog.
I was just about to purchase a domain name for my blog on blogger, using the option provided within blogger. I remember the discussions that the advantage of this is the old site still exists and redirects to the new one. I have a doubt though – what about feeds? Will my existing readers have to re-point their feed-readers to my NEW feed URL ?
I am not using feed-burner – just the default feed widget provided with blogger. I read that I can register with feedburner – using which I get feed statistics without my readers having to change edit the feed subscription. But I am worried about losing my existing subscribers of I change to a domain name or self-hosted blog.
I realize that this still does not qualify as “self-hosting” .. since all I am really doing is purchasing my own domain for what still remains to be essentially a blogger blog!
Any advise you would like to give me before I jump headlong into the world of domain names and self-hosting
?

Dude, Kiran, I am araid it looks like the only way to keep your feeds the same is to sign up for feedburner. Unfortunately, you will have to send emails and put in comments on the blogs of your readers asking them to update the feed. Starting out at feedburner is the best way to go since you may feel like moving to your own hosting later on. In that case, it is far easier to manage your feedburner feeds.
All the best man

Thanks a ton for the tips Anwin. I suppose I will club the 2 tasks – getting a domain name; and moving to feed-burner – so that I only have to ask my subscribers to change the Feed Url ONCE!
And thanks for that link you gave on my blog – its really useful.

Sure Kiran. Always like to help.
Cheers, Anwin
