I was going through the IndiBlogger forum and saw this interesting post on college ragging in India.
Ragging in Indian institutions has been a raging issue for quite some years now. I remember when I was in college or just completed there was this huge issue where in Annamalai University a guy was killed as a result of ragging. And then there are the newer incidents where a college kid may lose his eye and so on.
I am only putting my comment on the post by Anshul here. For the actual forum post please visit this link – http://www.indiblogger.in/forum/topic.php?id=647
My opinion on ragging:
I believe ragging has been prevalent for centuries in one form or another. This has been in the way of seniors picking juniors in many walks of life – barber shop, mechanic’s shop, organizations, school, college, etc. I rather think that evolution has its way of determining how you stand in social order and hence this becomes a vicious circle where the juniors today are tomorrow’s seniors.
However, this really need not be. Since ragging has obviously gotten out of hand in a lot of colleges in India I think it is a good idea that steps are being taken to eradicate (yes, I know it is a strong word) ragging.
My conclusion:
And you CAN get to know your seniors, juniors, bosses, newbies, etc without ‘ragging’

I never went to an Indian college, but from all the things I’ve heard and seen in the news..I always thought the whole ragging was way out of control. When it’s all fun and games and just people joking around as a form of getting to know each, it’s a good time. But when it gets out of control, it’s scary to think what group mentality can lead people to do. :/ Especially the cases in India with people getting physically hurt, etc. Not to mention whatever mental trauma those individuals end up going through.
It’s definitely uncomfortable. And good choice of word, eradicate is right.

Hi Archana, yes, you are correct. Things have gone out of hand in this country. We can no longer let ragging be an everyday part of college life.

Hi Anwin,

I completely agree with your thoughts and would love if you could have a look at my original post, http://www.youthkiawaaz.com/2009/03/ragging-brutal-punishment-for-admission.html

Absolutely true anwin. This all starts with juniors who get ragged first by the seniors and then these juniors flush out their frustration by ragging juniors next year. It seems no end, but there are anti-ragging committees formed inside the colleges that helps the institute eradicate this evil.

I was once ragged into picking up a pen with my ass. But that the silliest prank that the seniors played on me. Nowadays it is getting a lot more hideous.
