Bannerghatta National Park Big Cats In Trouble

Poor guys, they seem to have got some bug or something. It has been a sad week with 5 big cats dying in the past week at Bangalore’s Bannerghatta National Park or Biological Park. Two of them were old Bengal tigers and a White Tiger who, officials say, has died of an almost 3 months battle with kidney disease. And another, a cub which probably died of salmonella and E.coli. Really really sad.

Read more here and here.

Anyway, I feel someone has supplied real bad chicken meat there. Hmm…

Some of my old friends (who I hope are still running around):

He was quite majestic looking and not at all bothered about people around.

This guy was a bit uneasy around us. He was lying under the shades when we came and proceeded to get into the man made pool for a quick dip.

This guy was totally cool. All pictures were taken this April – on the 24th to be precise.

Some other pictures I liked:

One of the truly free guys. He was on the rampage and fighting turf wars all around us on the footpaths and on the trees.

Mother and two baby monkeys (Rhesus monkeys) watching out for the big guy in the previous picture.

And two butterflies ‘going at it’ at the butterfly park adjacent to BBP ;-) .

Please do check out my flickr set too.

Also posting here because of the interesting story. The Gelada monkeys are the world’s only grass eating primates alive. Man, that is something I never knew. Grass eating primates? Like us? Hmmm…

From NatGeo:

As grass-eaters, they are the last surviving species of ancient grazing primates that were once numerous. Geladas spend most of their day sitting down, plucking and munching on grasses. They have fatty rear ends, much like human buttocks, which seem well adapted to this activity.

Bangalore Indiblogger Meet

Ah, that was one satisfying meet for the indibloggers. I called for the meeting to initiate the whole new feature at indiblogger.in for calling for meetings within one’s city. And I should congratulate the indiblogger team, myself included, for making it a grand success.

The Bangalore meet started at 4:30 PM at Microssoft premises. It went on till about 8:30 PM. That was quite a long meeting I should say. The agenda included introduction of bloggers, an intro into indiblogger by Renie, a skit by the indiblogger team, a presentation of live writer by Microsoft, a presentation by leadcap on empowering India, and of course, free pizzas courtesy of Microsoft.

It was our first major initiative as part of the Chows gang. And we pulled it off. There were so many things that could have been done better with a little bit more planning, of course. But altogether, it was amazing, considering the feedback we got from the attendees. Read more at the following sites:

That’s me welcoming everyone to the Bangalore Indiblogger blogger meet.

That’s part of the bloggers at the meet intently listening to something.

That’s us doing the skit.

And that’s some of us just goofing around after the meet.

More pictures of the meet at Indiblogger group in flickr and Anoopkumar’s photostream at picasa.

I met a lot of people whom I truly found interesting and others who I would have liked to have more conversations. Maybe, in the next meeting. Some notable people are Himanshu (who someone called the ‘walking Stephen Hawking‘), Pradeep Nair (who had to leave early due to work), Mrinal, Ravi from Metblogs, Sanjukta, Comrade Chakra who was the dude of humor, and more and more.

Looking forward to other indiblogger meets now. Not sure if I can spare time to visit meetings in other cities, but in Bangalore, yes. I will be there!!!

Bannerghatta National Park

BBP 025, originally uploaded by Flaming Cyanide.

I’ve been in Bangalore for 4 years now and didn’t visit the Bannerghatta Biological Park until yesterday. It was worth going there though. Lots of people are not very keen at visiting BBP since it is smaller and there isn’t much to speak of about the zoo. Nevertheless, we, Anoop, Karthik, Nafisa and I, enjoyed the visit.

The best moment was when we saw the white tiger walking across the road in front of us. It was really agitated and aggressive. The first time when it snarled it was slightly scary. But the protection of the van reassured all of us.

This photo was a lucky one with the lioness yawning at the exact time I clicked on the shutter button on my camera.

Check out my flickr set on the trip.
