The Most Isolated Tribe In The World – Sentinelese

Yesterday, I was reading a post in Neatorama about an uncontacted tribe in the Amazon who attached a helicopter with arrows. Then I remembered reading a similar article a couple of years back in The Hindu about a similar incident in the Andaman Islands. So I quickly did an online research and yes the incident was almost the same. But this tribe was in India while the newer incident has happened in the Amazon.

I remember reading about this incident and thinking, wow, we are in the 21st century and there are fellow human beings still primitive (by our current standards) living amongst us in this world. And it is extremely hard to believe that they are living as much as the same way they lived for thousands of years. The Sentinelese tribe (the tribe in the Andaman Islands) have supposed to have lived in the same island for about 60000 years. Amazing stuff. And if we believe the Bible we are probably only 2000-4000 years old (our world). Hehehehe.

I have put some links where you can read about the sentinelese and about the attacking helicopter with arrows incident.

And some excerpts below:

“Yet when a helicopter flew low over the island, a Sentinelese man rushed out on to the beach, aiming his arrow at the pilot in a gesture that clearly said, ‘We don’t want you here’.”

The above incident clearly tells us that the Sentinelese have survived a thousand mishaps including the 2004 Tsunami and survived. Truly mind blowing stuff.

“Perhaps no people on Earth remain more genuinely isolated than the Sentinelese. They are thought to be directly descended from the first human populations to emerge from Africa, and have probably lived in the Andaman Islands for up to 60,000 years. The fact that their language is so different even from other Andaman islanders suggests that they have had little contact with other people for thousands of years.”

“It is the sheer, intractable hostility of the Sentinelese that makes them so appealing to science. Had they been amenable to the advances of the West, they would have been assimilated long ago, and their unique identity drowned in an inundation of foreign genes. Today, their isolation – biological and geographical – makes them invaluable to studying our own species.”

Chinese Soldiers – Pins In Their Collars And Crosses On Their Backs

Demonised in the West as goons guarding the Olympic torch along its chaotic world tour, these pictures show how China’s paramilitary police learn their unwavering discipline.

Officers of the People Paramilitary Police preparing for the Olympics are drilled on the parade ground with pins in their collars and crosses on their backs to ensure perfect posture.

But instead of the blue tracksuits members wore while escorting the flame, they are kitted out in full dress uniform during the exercise at their base in Shenyang, Liaoning province.

For Sale: 13-year-old Virgin

Oh man, this is happening in India? Still? Damn! Double Damn! Triple Damn! And I get to know through Nothing to do with Arboroath even though I am from India? Quadruple damn! I am not sure this is good at all. Penta damn!

Thirty miles west of the Taj Mahal, on the road to the pink city of Jaipur, tourists on buses pass a sight that the guide books rarely mention.

Tonight, one girl in particular is attracting attention as she sits on a stool by a fire so that she can be seen by passing vehicles. Her heavily made-up, striking face and beautiful pink sari make her look as if she were on her way to a party. But the truth is different. Suli, 14, is a virgin and a bidding war is being held for the right to be the first to sleep with her.

The normal rate is 100 rupees (£1.30) but a virgin is sold to the highest bidder for anything over 20,000 rupees. If she is very pretty, the community would hope to get up to 40,000 rupees. For this, the man can have access to the girl for as long as he likes – several hours, days, or even weeks. When he tires of her, there is a celebration. Because it is considered unlucky for a girl to keep the money from her first time, it is spent instead on an extravagant party. Jewellery is bought for her and for her relatives, goats are slaughtered and alcohol runs freely. There is dancing, and offerings are made to the gods.

Once a girl has lost her virginity she cannot marry. The choice has been made and the community celebrates it – this is her non-wedding night.

How Indians Think

That wasn’t a very apt title. But then I didn’t want to plagiarize E=mc^2 title “Guide to Indian Idiocy I”. Anyways, Sujai’s blog, to which I subscribe to, has a great article how Indians equivocate wisdom, knowledge and education. Fantastic read, as most of his posts are.

Some excerpts below:

Therefore, it is a given fact for most Indians that a Professor knows more than the student, an older man knows more than the younger man, a boss knows more than the subordinate and so on. There are no arguments about it or doubts about it. This is a cardinal rule applicable to all domains of knowledge.

1. Knowledge depletes with each generation.

One can extrapolate the above observation to say that Indians also believe that our older generations knew much more than what we know. For Indians, knowledge keeps depleting with each generation, not increasing as is conventional wisdom in the West. Indians believe that our ancestors, during Vedic times, knew almost everything.

2. Wisdom is Knowledge.

For most Indians, Wisdom is nothing but Knowledge itself. And knowledge is directly correlated with one’s education. And education is directly correlated with one’s degrees. For most elite and urban Indians, there is no difference between knowledge and wisdom. They are synonymous. Hence, a PhD is supposedly wiser than a Masters Degree holder is wiser than a Bachelor’s Degree holder and so on. At the bottom are the rural (and therefore ‘illiterate’). Invariably, all those who went to IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, etc, are all wise for the rest of their lives.

And the best

Look at the present campaign by TOI called Lead India. It is nothing but a reflection of this sentiment held by most urban people. All those who got selected are urban, well-educated and comprise mostly upper caste, and Hindu. When describing them, TOI uses many words and sentences to talk about their qualifications, which college they went to, which MNC they worked for, etc. According to me, most of them have completely vacuous opinions on socialism, on caste-issues, on secularism, right to vote, coalition governments, etc. In my opinion they are inane and downright dumb. However they seem to reflect the sentiments of these urban Indians very well that Wisdom = Knowledge = Education = College Degrees.

3. Experience is Age.

Older a person, it is naturally assumed, the more experienced he is. Even if that person has not traveled anywhere outside his city, Even if that person has not met people of different cultures, even if that person has not tasted different cuisines of different lands. Just because he is old, he is considered more experienced.

Chinese And German Cultures

This is a cool way to represent Chinese and German cultures, in a graphical way. From Neatorama – “Mr. Liu Yong, a Chinese who was educated in Germany, makes a comparison between German culture and Chinese culture, illustrated in international symbol-style graphics.”

The one below compares German and Chinese culture with respect to “Opinions”. BlueGerman, RedChinese.

Below one is about “Queues”.
