Freedom Jam is back, but not with a great bang as it was some years ago :-(

I remember a time when we used to party from 6 in the evening of Independance day till 6 in the morning on Independance day. And it used to happen at The Club on the outskirts of Bangalore city. There used to be so many bands playing all the time and it was no doubt the woodstock of Bangalore.

However, these days we have to settle down for a small but still energizing concert at Alliance Francaise.  The festival is presented by Bharat Mata Nach Kud Baja, who started the Freedom Jam concept. As usual, the concert is free and the bands play for free.

Bangaloreans, I will be there today after 4 PM. Will you?

It was a great day for me and the IndiBlogger team. We were all excited about the first of many IndiBlogger meets in 2009. And like last year, we wanted to start with the Bangalore blogger community.

This time we did not get a larger auditorium but a smaller one at Microsoft, Bangalore office. However, it had a nice ambiance albeit the not so good acoustics. We start at 3:20 PM and kicked off with a welcome speech from Anoop.

Then I was pushed on to the front and was asked to start off the 1 minute to fame session. Although unprepared to start I did manage to get a few laughs from the bloggers when I talked about my Idiot of the day blog and one of its posts, with a little bit of prompting from Anoop. I wasn’t listening to all the bloggers, I am afraid, since I was busy welcoming fellow bloggers into the meet.

Then Girish from Microsoft talked a bit about Microsoft BizSpark, a Microsoft initiative for startups and entrepreneurs.

And then started one of the highlights of the evening, the discussion on blogger rights spearheaded by Sandil from Mutiny.in. The bloggers were inerested to discussion what we can write about and what could be legally interpreted as maligning indivuals or organizations. The press had a very active interest too in this session.

Next came the Windows 7 session taken by Vic and Vijay. It was a good session with a lot of interaction from the crowd. We had to stop the session after a long time for account of the pizzas getting cold… hehehehe ;-) .

After a bit of food in our stomachs and our energies revitalized we got back to what we came for, talk and discussion about blogging. For the very first time our “know your readers” session was a blooper. And I digress.

This was a time when Aarif talked a bit about a software he has developed and very popular on the internet. This is a software called Process Manager for Windows – PMW – which is an efficient and better alternative for your Windows Task Manager. Do try it out if you are computer savvy.

Anwin at IndiBlogger Bangalore Meet 2009

The last session was an impromptu session on blogging in general. Sherin, a blogger who earns money through his investment blog stole the show for most of the time. And then a question was asked about self hosted blogs which I had a lot to say. After all, I had used most of the blog platforms with domain names in these past years. I have promised to put out a document that will explain how to easily buy a domain and host it through a blog provider like Google or Wordpress.

And then we winded up and with happy smiles all around we left for home and endless parties!

A day after eight blasts in Bangalore, another bomb was found near the Forum Mall in Koramangala, one of the IT city’s nerve centres.

The police have now blocked traffic to the entire stretch and are now searching the area.

The live bomb, which was found near Forum Mall in Koramangala area, was planted by a man of 25-26 years of age this morning, Bangalore Police Commissioner S Bidri told reporters.

“We received information this morning at around 10:45 am that an unknown person wearing a red T-shirt placed a bucket like object. We immediately sent the bomb disposal squad to the site which successfully defused the bomb,” Bidri said.

The Police Commissioner added that the bomb contained material similar to the one used in yesterday’s blasts.

The IT city continues to remain on high alert after yesterday’s blasts. Security has been beefed up in areas with high density of population, defence and space establishments, the State Secretariat, the High Court, IT firms, railway stations, bus stops and the airport.

Some advise to people in Bangalore:

  • Stay indoors today
  • If you have to absolutely go out, stay away from public places as much as possible (malls, theatres, bus stops, markets, etc.)
  • Keep in touch with your relatives / friends and
  • If you see any suspicious looking objects or person(s) be on the alert, move away from the place and then call your nearest police station or the police control room to 98440-51677 or the police head quarters: 99805-10137

Although no one has claimed responsibility for the blasts, sources in the Union Home Ministry say Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba along with the local support of SIMI could be responsible.

Police sources in Bangalore however say the nature of the attack points at the Bangladesh outfit HuJI.

There are reports that a Karnataka police team left for Hyderabad on Friday night to interrogate an MBA student who was arrested on July 15 in the city. They hope to interrogate Mohammed Muqeemudin Yasir, brother of Raziuddin Nasir, who was arrested on January 29 on charges of organising terror-training camps in the forests near Hubli, Karnataka.
